Planning Poker
Estimate your stories collaboratively with your team using planning poker cards.
What is Planning Poker?
Planning Poker is an agile estimation technique that helps teams estimate the effort required for user stories or tasks. It promotes team collaboration and helps reach consensus on story complexity.
How to play:
- The product owner presents a user story to the team
- Team members discuss the story and ask clarifying questions
- Each team member privately selects a card representing their estimate
- All cards are revealed simultaneously
- Team discusses significant differences in estimates
- Process repeats until consensus is reached
Card values:
The numbers follow a modified Fibonacci sequence, representing relative complexity:
- 1-3: Simple tasks, well understood
- 5-8: Moderate complexity, some unknowns
- 13-21: Complex tasks, significant unknowns
- ?: Insufficient information to estimate
Tip: Focus on relative sizing rather than absolute time. A story estimated as "8" should be roughly twice as complex as a "4".
